The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) is a denomination of Lutheranism in the United States. It was founded in 1847 by a group of German immigrants, and its headquarters is in St. Louis, Missouri. The LCMS is organized into 35 districts, each of which has its own president and governing body. The national church body is led by a president, who is elected every three years at the synodical convention. The LCMS operates two seminaries, Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as well as ten colleges and universities, numerous elementary and secondary schools, and various mission organizations, social service agencies, and publishing houses. The LCMS has a strong tradition of hymnody and has produced several hymnals, including the Lutheran Service Book. As of 2020, the LCMS has over 2 million baptized members in over 6,000 congregations throughout the United States. It is one of the largest Lutheran denominations in the country and continues to be a significant influence in American Christianity.
