Stillwater Mining Company was a palladium and platinum mining company based in Billings, Montana. Founded in 1992, it operated two mines in the Stillwater Complex: the Stillwater Mine near Nye and the East Boulder Mine near Big Timber. The company was the only producer of palladium and platinum in the United States and the largest primary producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) outside of South Africa and Russia. The company’s mining operations focused on extracting PGMs from the J-M Reef, one of the highest-grade PGM deposits in the world. In addition to mining operations, Stillwater operated a metallurgical processing facility in Columbus, Montana, where it processed mine concentrates and recycled spent catalytic converters to recover platinum group metals. In 2017, Sibanye Gold Limited (now Sibanye-Stillwater) acquired Stillwater Mining Company for $2.2 billion, marking the first major investment by a South African mining company in the United States. The acquisition created one of the world’s largest PGM producers. Under Sibanye-Stillwater’s ownership, the mining operations continue to be a significant employer in Montana and a crucial source of PGMs for various industrial applications, including automotive catalytic converters, electronics, and jewelry.
