About International Securities Exchange

The International Securities Exchange (ISE) was a major electronic options exchange founded in 2000 as the first fully electronic U.S. options exchange. Located in New York City, ISE revolutionized the options trading industry by introducing electronic trading at a time when floor-based trading was the norm. The exchange specialized in equity and index options trading. In 2007, ISE was acquired by Eurex, a derivatives exchange owned by Deutsche Börse AG. The acquisition marked one of the largest transatlantic exchange combinations at the time. In 2016, Nasdaq acquired ISE from Deutsche Börse Group for $1.1 billion, further consolidating the U.S. options market. During its operation, ISE developed several innovative trading products and technologies, including the ISE Stock Exchange and PrecISE Trade, a front-end trading platform. The exchange was also known for creating proprietary index products, including the ISE Water Index and various sector indexes. Under Nasdaq’s ownership, ISE’s operations were integrated into Nasdaq’s existing options business. The integration included the migration of ISE’s three options exchanges to Nasdaq’s INET technology platform, completed in 2017. The ISE brand was subsequently phased out, with its trading venues becoming part of Nasdaq’s options exchange operations.
