The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), now known as the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, is a nationally recognized rehabilitation research hospital located in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1954, it has consistently ranked as the top rehabilitation hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report since 1991. The institution specializes in comprehensive physical medicine and rehabilitation for patients with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, amputations, and musculoskeletal conditions. In March 2017, RIC transformed into the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, moving to a new $550 million, 1.2-million-square-foot facility in downtown Chicago. The hospital features five innovation centers, each focused on specific functional outcomes: Think + Speak, Legs + Walking, Arms + Hands, Strength + Endurance, and Pediatric. The institution is also a leader in rehabilitation research, with numerous breakthrough studies in neuroscience, bionic medicine, robotics, and prosthetics. It serves as a teaching affiliate of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and operates multiple outpatient centers throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.
